Athlete On Fire
So THIS Is Fitness:08 - The Struggle Is Real

Fitness is hard. Life is hard. Why does everything have to be so hard? Often we want to shed the stuff that’s harder than we feel like it has to be. And often, the thing that’s easiest to shed...is health and fitness. The gym membership. The running. The whatever. We make things harder than they have to be. We give in.

That struggle is what keeps us from achieving the greatness we’re all capable of, and it’s up to us to find a way to break through. Darrell talks about his own struggle, how this stuff happens, and what, ultimately, it’s gonna come down to to bust out and make it happen.

Today I bring you Steve Garland. A master motivator and speaker, Steve has traveled the country telling his story and inspiring audiences. Steve’s childhood was layered with periods of instability. Bouncing back and forth between his father and his mother, Steve and his twin brother ultimately settled into the single parent lifestyle, being raised raised mostly by their mother. Steve has witnessed first hand the destruction that addiction, violence and incarceration can do to a family…but the experiences weren’t all bad. He believes now that it was the storms in life that have ultimately brought him to a place of purpose, peace and hope.

Finding his way in life through sport and the guidance of a few key people, he ended up at the top public university in the nation, the University of Virginia, where he found himself wrestling for the national championship in front of 15,000 people and millions more watching on ESPN. Steve is now mentoring young men as the head wrestling coach at the University of Virginia.

STIF:07 - You Can Lead A Horse To Water...

Even if you’re a fitness fanatic, or had that epiphany and “found fitness”...it can be tough to get those you care about to have that same kind of “awakening”. It can be frustrating, saddening, and even cause a little anger and resentment when friends and loved ones just refuse to do something you KNOW will be beneficial for them, and that they might even enjoy! So how do you get those YOU care about to the same place? You might not like the answer…

It was like Christmas speaking with the legend Andrew Hamilton and satisfying our (okay, Tory's) obsession with 14ers and FKTs. The Nolan's and 14er record holder humbly inspires and educates us on how to be a badass male unicorn.

Our host had an experience on the treadmill and the same day found some science to support it.  Is fatigue totally in your head?  Also, DNF-ing is such a daunting concept.  Most of us have been there or will be one day but what about focusing on the start line and letting the cards fall where they may.

Today I bring you Nate Quarry. Nate grew up in a sheltered lifestyle and did not participate in organized sports until age 24, when he first became exposed to MMA. After a period of self-discovery, he rejected his Jehovah's Witness upbringing, which he later characterized as a cult who control their members 24 hours a day. This led to expulsion from the Jehovah’s Witness faith and caused him to become alienated from his family and former friends. He began to associate with others outside of the church and along the way began to train in mixed martial arts fighting. He landed a spot on the Ultimate Fighter tv show and eventually made his way to Team Quest in Oregon. He fought 22 professional fights, winning 18. He’s now an entrepreneur with his hands in multiple businesses.

Nav Akbar once called the bluff of an armed robber that threatened to rob his store. Telling the thief what physical discourtesies would happen, Nav made it very clear that he wasn't the sort of person who you tangle with.

Growing up in Scotland, UK, you learn how to survive, get tough or let life drag you down. His years of working as a mild-mannered grocery store clerk only fed him more and more fuel that would drive him to become of of the main faces of OCR in the UK today.

Cookie caught up with his good friend and they chatted about Nav's introduction to OCR and endurance and the differences between US and UK events.
